Galapagos Islands
May 2022
There are six species of Flamingo called the American Flamingo (Caribbean Flamingo), Andean Flamingo, Chilean Flamingo, Greater Flamingo, James’s Flamingo (Puna Flamingo), and Lesser Flamingo. There is debate on whether or not the flamingos found in the Galapagos are conspecific with the Greater Flamingo.
Their habitat is salty lakes, where they can find food in the mud with their unique curved beaks. Their plumage is pink thanks to their shrimp and algae diet, which is high in carotenoids. The more shrimp they eat, the pinker they become, having some specimens a paler tone. A flamingo lifespan can reach up to 50 years.
